The following email was forwarded to us by a union member who wrote to Wawa regarding their non-union construction activities:
Dear Mr. Fehre,
Thank you for taking the time to contact us with your questions. I
apologize for the brief delay in responding to your e-mail.
We appreciate the opportunity to address your questions and to correct any
misperceptions about our practice of hiring contractors to perform
construction work.
First, Wawa is a regional company that uses locally-based builders and
contractors, both union and non-union. Our newest stores under
construction, scheduled to open in early October, were built by local union
contractors P. Agnes and Equipment Rental and Construction Company.
We also believe in long-term partnerships. This helps us maintain quality
and consistency. Most of the general contractors selected to do new store
construction or remodels are companies that Wawa has worked with for many,
many years. Most subcontractors employed by the general contractors are
local to each specific job.
Each construction project is not only an investment in Wawa; it's an
investment in the communities we serve. Beyond the physical buildings, we
make significant improvements in other areas including: landscaping,
traffic/road improvements, enhanced convenience and increased
beautification. We have a long-standing tradition of being a strong
corporate citizen in the communities we serve. We take a proactive role in
bringing commerce, stability, charitable initiatives and a commitment to
improving every community in which we operate. And, as a company, we employ
over 16,000 associates directly from the local communities in which our
stores operate.
We appreciate the opportunity to respond to your concerns, and we hope this
helps clarify our practices. Thank you again for taking the time to contact
us.
Very truly yours,
Lori Bruce
